CAPA: Proposed Barcelona El Prat Airport expansion faces multiple obstacles

10 August, 2021

CAPA - Centre for Aviation, in a report entitled: 'Barcelona Airport to become an 'intercontinental hub'', stated (10-Aug-2021) the Spanish Government's decision to invest EUR1.7 billion towards turning Barcelona-El Prat Josep Tarradellas Airport into an 'intercontinental hub' would be more justifiable if the airport and Madrid Barajas Airport were to become separately owned, competing entities. The report adds that planned runway extensions indicate the airport will focus on long haul hubbing. The need for EU approval before the project can commence is cited as a complicating factor, given the environmental opposition to the construction of a satellite terminal to support the runway extension.
