Uiltrasporti: European Commission competition remedies for Alitalia 'unacceptable'

13 April, 2021

Uiltrasporti secretary general Claudio Tarlazzis, in testimony before the Commission for Transport and Production Activities chamber on Alitalia said (13-Apr-2021) it is necessary for Italy to have a "solid" flag carrier given its importance to the economy and sustainability of the country's air travel and tourism sectors. Mr Tarlazzis said that the establishment of a "bonsai company" of reduced scope as has been proposed will not meet the conditions necessary to compete in the air travel market. He added that the European Commission's competition remedies to cut slots and eliminate the Alitalia brand are "unacceptable" and its proposals to pare off the MRO and ground handing sections from the carrier will deprive the carrier of strategic, profit making assets.
