Fifth freedom flights featuring US markets have taken on an air of controversy during the last few years as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have argued Emirates Airline utilises illegal subsidies on fifth freedom services originating in Dubai through Milan to New York JFK and from Dubai through Athens to Newark. But now United Star Alliance partner Air China aims to launch a fifth freedom continuation of its Beijing-Houston service to Panama City, and Houston is lobbying for approval of the proposed flight.
